Blurb?

Hello Lovelies!

Just a quick reminder for all our talented authors to please send us short descriptions of the pieces you wrote.

We'll be using these to compose our promotional pamphlets as well as to create a marketing campaign for Longitude.

The blurbs would probably come in handy for our Design department when they're thinking about illustrations, and maybe whoever is writing the Preface could find it handy too, so whoever needs a copy of the compilation, just drop me a line, and I shall send it over.

Please mail your blurbs to me at sabera.jade@gmail.com by November 22nd

Cheers!

Sabrina

A close call for the new name

Last week we had a brainstorm session about the title of the anthology. We began with we knew about the book--that it is an e-book, produced by UBC creative writing masters students and is published by the program. Here is a brainstorm session, courtesy my new iPhone 4:

This week we returned to class to vote on the name. It was a close call... but longitutes won--with thrusty (a take on the 2009-10 thrust anthology) coming in as a close second option.

Happy Halloween anthology cohorts.

Since we hope to be launching our anthology sometime around Valentine's Day (an arguably less fun holiday), I thought I'd post a reminder about our next baby step: handing in our rewrites!

Rewrites should be emailed to your editor and to Michelle.

When? Tomorrow!

(If you've forgotten about this, hopefully you have some Halloween candy to fuel your rewrite efforts.)

Step one: submissions and editing

The ten students that produce Thrust are part of CRWR 521. This year they tried not to choke when I told them that their submission to the book was due the following week. Eyes popped and rolled. Tongues went numb. Such is the schedule for a book made--from start to finish--in just three months.

What students submitted were pieces that they've had in their filing cabinets for a while, maybe a crushed racket of papers they found when moving the living room couch. What all the submissions have in common is that they were troublesome, unruly and needed an editor's firm guidance.

Now, working in partners the grad students have put on their spectacles to edit each other's work. Next week they submit their first assignment, an editorial report looking at structure and style, as laid out in the Editors' Association of Canada Professional Editorial Standards and Maron L. Waxman's classic article, Line Editing: Drawing Out the Best Book Possible.

Once finished the report, they will sit down with their author to begin the delicate discussion about "necessary, felicitous and meticulous" changes. After that, it's revision time. Then we run like headless chickens to publish a book in record time.

A New Year, A New Thrust

This year UBC's Creative Writing Program is pleased to bring you our first e-anthology of original creative works. We have no idea what we're doing or how we will do it. Tune in here to track our progress and, eventually, to download your own digital copy of the new outrageous edition of thrust, coming to you some time in the new year.
